In the Tour de France, sprint points are awarded to riders based on several criteria: for their finish in the different stages of the race, for their performance in the time trials, and how well they do in sprints along the way during various stages. As a general rule, the most consistent finishers and those who do the best in the intermediate sprints will pick up the most points. The overall point leader after each stage gets the green jersey. The winner of the green jersey is considered the best sprinter of that particular Tour.
