With the increasing interest in fixies and single-speed bikes, I think it's safe to say that -- like a lot of things in life -- there is a definite trend toward simplicity emerging lately. With that in mind, a friend sent me a link to Inner City Bikes. Check out their two models, which are a 29er and an astounding bike rolling on 36-inch wheels with barely a pencil-wide space between them. Both have pedals connected directly to the wheel (no chain, but set-up with a free wheel sprocket) and a resulting 1:1 gear ratio.
While not yet available to the general public, here's hoping these bikes find their way to a store nearby sometime soon. I don't know how practical they are -- their statement that "Bicycling [in the inner city environment with minimal space] can be more about fashion and culture than speed and performance" kinda makes that point -- but they still look very cool to me.

Love the the elegant and different design, the “drive” system, and the 36″ inch wheels. I’d love to give it a ride!
