Fall is a transition time for competitive cyclists. Road racing is winding down, but that doesn't mean you have to hang up the bike for the winter. With the growing popularity of cyclocross, if you want to still compete, there are plenty of chances to get out in the mud and the cold and have a ball in the process.
What is cyclocross, you say? Take a road bike, put on some knobby tires, and race it on a course that sends you on pavement, grass and dirt with a whole bunch of obstacles added in that you have to dismount and jump over or run up. USA Cycling, the sanctioning organization for bike racing in the States has a terrific article on the basics for getting started in cyclocross.
