Bike lanes create a happy space for many cyclists when riding in traffic. However, there are occasional conflicts with people who park in the bike lane or otherwise impede the ability of bikers to utilize these spaces.
It was exactly this issue that prompted a couple different videos that I've seen lately, and I wanted to share them both with you. They're both hilarious, and go to somewhat outrageous measures to make a point.
In the first one, New York city cyclist Casey Neistat got a ticket from NYPD for riding his bike outside the bike lane, even when the lane was clearly blocked by a vehicle. So rather than get mad, Casey got creative, making a film of him riding his bike in the bike lane NO MATTER WHAT, continually running himself into every kind of obstacle imaginable, including trash cans, taxis, moving vans and more.
In the second one, which ran as a piece in this week's New York Times, Arturas Zuokas, who is the mayor of Vilnius, Lithuania, uses a military vehicle to crush an illegally parked Mercedes-Benz, one of the many luxury vehicles that habitually block a bike path along a main thoroughfare in the capital city.
