In an announcement today, cycling luminaries and Colorado officials, including Lance Armstrong and Governor Bill Ritter released details of a new UCI-sanctioned stage race coming to the Rocky Mountain state in 2011, capping two-years worth of discussions and speculation.
"This race is about future generations of cycling in the U.S.," said Armstrong at the Denver press conference, held in the shadow of the state capitol. "What started out as a wacky idea is a reality."
Taking the September slot vacated by the now-defunct Tour of Missouri, the Quizno's Pro Challenge will span seven days and likely start and end in Denver. It is expected to draw some of the world's top cyclists who previously competed in the Missouri event, which had seen the likes of two-time Tour de France winner Alberto Contador, multi-stage TdF winner and human rocket Mark Cavendish, cycling superstars George Hincapie, Levi Leipheimer and others.
