Does Your Company Offer the Bicycle Commuter Act?

Monday August 24, 2009

A reader who works at a large hospital in Florida wrote me, asking about the Bicycle Commuter Act and how many companies had implemented it.

She's on an employee advisory committee trying to figure out wellness issues that also benefit the hospital. From that perspective, of course, encouraging more bike commuters is a slam dunk. Freed up parking spaces for patients and visitors. Less auto congestion. Improved employee health.  All that awesome stuff.

The dilemma is that the hospital is a non-profit and thus gets no tax breaks itself.  Instead, it's looking participation in this as meaning a potential outlay of $20/month per participant.  And in these days of cost-cutting wherever possible, that isn't very popular with the adminstration.

So -- for the sake of our questioner, and for all the rest of us interested cyclists:  do you work at a health care or non-profit that has jumped onto the Bicycle Commuter Act?  How about those of us who work at other for-profit businesses.  Do they offer it at your work?  Has anyone asked if this is a possibility?  Please share your experience with the Bicycle Commuter Act at your workplace.  Comment below.

My company (engineering firm in the Chicago suburbs) just initiated a “Wellness Program.” The program doesn’t have much to it yet. I’m currently drafting a letter with my ideas – one of which is bicycle commuter incentives including the tx-free stipend. Wish me luck!
