Friday is National Bike-to-Work Day
Friday, May 18th, 2007 is designated as National Bike-to-Work Day, and the League of American Bicyclists has put together a great collection of resources with tons of practical tips for people thinking about a bike commute. If you're already a believer, it's a nifty piece of pro-bike propaganda to help convince your friends that it's worth a try.
With gas prices inching ever higher, more people than ever are giving serious consideration to getting to work on a bike. Do you ride to work or school? If not, what's holding you back?

I ride a folding Citizen bike to work 3 times a week. Besides for crazy drivers, I love it.
A parent at my kids’ school had the gall to say “riding bikes to school is insane.” As if hauling the kiddies to school in gas guzzling land yachts is the height of sanity! Ride on.
I recently purchased a road bike so I could ride to work a few days a week. I’m a police officer and work twelve hour shifts, my commute is 14 miles ea. way. Does this sound insane and will I actually save gas money. The guys I work with think I’m crazy, but I don’t mind the challenge, plus I used to be in the Marines, so maybe I am.
Hi Jason – I don’t think you’re crazy at all. With a road bike, depending on terrain and your speed, etc., it’ll probably take you somewhere around an hour for your commute. And your drive now is what, 30 minutes maybe, end-to-end? So each day basically you’ll get 1)a “free” hour of exercise that you’d otherwise be driving, 2) save a gallon or two of gas with each round trip (what’s current MPG on your car?) and 3) have a great time in the process being out on your bike. Sounds like a great idea to me all around.
If you are setting up a bike to work event for 2008, please contact me at biketoworkweek.org and I will add it to the online map and event list.
