The rider designated as the best climber during the mountain stages wears a distinctive white jersey with red polka dots.

Though the award for the best climber has been presented since 1933, it was only in 1975 that the white jersey with red polka dots was presented. The award is based on a points system that recognizes performance in the toughest climbs. Doing well in the steeper ascents earns a rider more points.
