Bike Helmets and Headwear

Candid reviews on the best options for your noggin when you're out on the bike.

By , About.com Guide

So maybe what goes on your head is not the first thing you think about when you're getting out on the bike.  Yeah, sure, you've got your helmet, but for many people that's sort of a an automatic, no-thinking required deal.  But is your helmet still up to snuff?  It's possible that it's damaged and you may not even realize it. If a replacement is in the cards, we've got some feedback on possible replacements.

And there are certainly other fun and cool choices for what you wear on your head and under your helmet for either warmth, comfort or style.  Check 'em all out here and see what you've been missing.

1. Bell Sweep Helmet

Bell Sweep Helmet
Bell's Sweep helmet is a top of the line helmet that you'll see a lot on serious racers of both mountain and road bikes. At $135 MSRP, you can find a lot of cheaper helmets, but none that match the Sweep's level of quality in construction and design. If you've got the money to spend for a top-notch helmet, this is one you'll be happy with.

2. Equinox Helmet by Louis Garneau

The Equinox helmet by Louis Garneau is a terrific product. At $39.99, you get high-end performance at mid-level price. The Equinox has tons of ventilation, fits nicely, adjusts easily and looks great. It compares very favorably with much higher-end helmets like the Bell Sweep helmet, which at $130 costs about three times more.

3. Pryme 8 Helmet and the Pryme 8 Tat2 Helmet

If you're looking for a basic, solid helmet for BMX, skating, or pure urban riding, look no further than the Pryme 8 helmet. With a range of colors that'll suit anyone's taste - from flat black and olive drab to eggplant, rust and pink - you can even get the jazzed-up graphics on the sister model Pryme 8 Tat2 helmet.

4. Coolmax Headcovers by Headsweats

Coolmax headcoverings by Headsweats are billed as "cloth to keep you cool." The idea is that, by wicking away sweat, these will help you stay cooler and drier. They're certainly comfortable to wear under your helmet. Will they keep you cooler? Your mileage may vary.

5. Wool Bicycling Caps by Walz Caps

Walz offers classic caps made from wool; performance bike caps made from high-tech material to wick away sweat; or even caps made from eco-friendly hemp.
