I recently received the following email from a reader named Jacob:
Hi Dave! I want to try the following 1 day endurance ride as a challenge to myself. It is approx. 180 miles (290 km) from San Jose to Newcastle, California. Here a link to the route. http://g.co/maps/hvsgd Any thoughts on this?
So I'm turning this one to you, the readers. Have you ever done a ride like this before? What advice or suggestions do you have for Jacob? Comment below.

I’ve done the Seattle to Portland ride in one day a couple of times. It ends up being 204 miles.
Here’s my advice.
Start as early as possible
Ingest 300 calories an hour. Snickers bars work great
Drink one water bottle an hour
Every rest break use chamois cream.
Keep your rest breaks short
If you follow those guidelines you’ll have a lot of fun.
Good luck.
I rode from san jose to yosemite valley ~ about 210 miles~really challenging ride, but I get to bragging rights! It took about 18 hours.
