Levi's Releases Special Version of 511 Skinny Jean for Cyclists

Follow me on:

Levis 511 skinny commuter jeans Skinny jeans are all the rage these days. Those low-riding, tight-fitting jeans are what you need if you're going to be in fashion, and Levi's 511 version is right at the leading edge.

Recognizing the natural link to young, bike-riding urbanites, Levi's has rolled out a special version of the 511 skinny jean with features specific to cyclists, including a higher waistband in back (to keep the infamous plumber's crack covered), a hidden cell phone pocket and a reflective stripe sewn into the underside of the material, which appears like magic only when the pant legs are rolled up.

Other nifty features in the cyclists' version of the Levi's 511 include stretchy fabric which is specially treated to be both water-resistant and anti-odor, and a special belt-loop waistband smartly designed for carrying a U-lock.

We had a chance to try these out and loved the cyclist-specific design.  The only drawback--and something for you to keep in mind if you are considering ordering a pair--is that there is a lot of truth in calling these SKINNY jeans.  My thighs barely fit in normal pants, and my calves are an aberration of nature, roughly the size and shape of two glorious Christmas hams.  That means there is no way that I can fit into these pants using normal sizing.  Might fit me if I went about three sizes larger than normal, but these jeans are perhaps best left to those for whom (I believe) they were designed: young, bike-riding urbanites, who are like 20-years old and weigh 125 pounds with legs like popsicle sticks.

The bike part of them is definitely cool so go try them on in the store and see if the fit works for you as well.  Available ($78) at Levi's.com in denim and khaki, plus a black crop version designed in a spirit that evokes the look of more traditional knickers.

They would suit those who ride Fixies and wear Hoodies and also those on BMX Bikes also the Student Population in otherwords thin Young People. I have passed the Rubicon and anything like this would look ridiculous on me.

I would not like a New York U Lock hanging out of my Clothes either ,too heavy and uncomfortable. I have two pairs of Black Jeans,Levis 501 and Wrangler which I sometimes use on my Bikes around Dublin City but they are just the ordinary type and are very comfortable however they get heavy when it rains.

I like the fact that these new Jeans are water resistant and would buy the ordinary type Jeans if they were water resistant too and were designed for Cycling.

As an afterthought ,something that might Pique your interest is the new Brompton Oratory Jacket made by Brompton Folding Bicycles in England. It is a Beautiful looking Suave Debonair Biking Jacket for the Man about Town that you could wear going to Dinner and it does not look like a Biking Jacket. It is fairly expensive at around £250 GBP but worth it for the styling even if you did not own a Bike.Dublin Ireland.

As they show in the video On the LEVI site), these jeans are for wanna-be hipsters who only ride bicycles in their imagination.
And why would you need water resistant/anti bacterial jeans when you are riding in the rain in a t-shirt, sneakers? The only part of you that will be dry is your knees.
