If you've ever been to Las Vegas, you know traffic congestion can be a big problem. The Strip is clogged, of course, with tourist traffic crawling back and forth between the casinos but the area's highways are generally a mess, too, thanks to the high growth rates the area has seen over the past two decades, some of the highest in the county.
The good news is that Las Vegas public employees now have the option of borrowing electric bicycles to get around town. A new E-bike program, funded by a federal grant from the Federal Highway Administration, will allow workers to avoid having to use their car and negotiate traffic to conduct city business that is only a short distance away.
The fleet of 25 E-bikes are stored and recharged in lockers at various locations around downtown Las Vegas. Fewer cars on the road will also generally ease traffic congestion and improve air quality, and officials expect to save $100,000 on fuel and automotive costs.
Additionally, "complete streets" design being incorporated into new road construction that is intentionally friendly to cyclists and walkers, plus a new transit station with bike shop, storage racks, locker rooms and showers table are other measures the area is taking to improve conditions for people who travel other than trapped inside the infernal combustion automobile.
