Every time it snows, the jokers at work ask if I've got studded tires on my bike. Har har. Or if I remembered to put on the tire chains. Oh stop, now you're really killing me.
Well, actually, the answer is yes for both cases, if you want to know.
If you are facing extended periods when riding on snow or ice is a reality, there are options for fixing your tires so that they get much better traction on the white stuff. You can:
- buy commercially available studded bike tires, specially designed for riding in the snow. Schwalbe Marathons are the best-known tire of this type on the market.
- Or you can attempt to make your own studded tires, recommended for those who really love the Do-It-Yourself projects
- Finally, it's possible to fashion tire chains of a sort for your bike out of zip ties -- but note, these are really only workable on bikes with disc brakes.
