So I'm looking on Amazon at the list of top selling bike movies, and eight of the 25 are from a company I've never heard of called Bike-O-Vision.  Turns out that they're "virtual reality" movies that you watch when you're on your trainer or exercise bike -- scenes from great places to ride around the U.S. and around the world.  And this is actual video taken from the road-- not some computer generated hocus-pocus.  But is it effective?  Does it make riding indoors more enjoyable? Check out our full review of the Bike-O-Vision virtual reality DVDs to find out.

Personally, I found the Bike-O-Vision DVD’s had two big problems. First, perspective was not that of someone on a bike – too fast & too high. Second, the music was REALLY bad. I turned it off and used my own MP3 player. A REALLY good virtual ride can be found on the BikeVideosOnline.com DVD series BtBoP (Behind the bars of Paul). From a vibration free! camera on the handlebars, you are put into group and single rides with great music and training tools. If you have to train indoors, this is the way to go. It’s fun watching some of the strange hand & arm signals from other riders, while you sweat!

Really good ride can be only outdoors. Even most realistic “movie” wont replace good ride under the sun (or rain, actually;))

Sorry to disagree, but if you have to train indoors, get a CompuTrainer. While they don’t have the fanciest graphics out there (albeit improving greatly) it’s the best tool on the market for indoor cycling training.

Hey Oldgrad, I think you meant http://www.cyclingvideosonline.com I’ve never had a chance to watch Bike-O-Visions or the VR Spinnervals, But, I like that the Bike-O-Visions are coming from the standpoint of purely scenic rides. The main difference with Cycling Videos Online is that the videos provide workout data to make it a workout video, not just a scenic trek. Plus, because these are shot from a bike mounted cam, the rides take you on trails, in groups and you can really sense the effort up hills and the speed on descents!

There are a number of suppliers offering excellent virtual cycling videos. Two of the best are Ride Fit (http://www.ride-fit.com) and The Sufferfest (http://www.thesufferfest.com). Many people find these virtual cycling videos more entertaining and inspiring since they’re filmed in an outdoor environment. Since they feature first person footage of actual rides, users will experience, as closely as can be achieved in an indoor environment, actually being there on the road.
