Best Songs About Bikes and Biking - Name Your Favorite

By June 26, 2009

Follow me on:

Let's face it - there aren't zillions of songs out there about riding bikes. Sure, Queen had "I Want to Ride My Bicycle" and there's "Bicycle Built for Two" a true oldie from 1892. But what are some other songs you can think of about bikes and biking? Comment below.

“Cut to the Chase” from the Counterparts album by RUSH and “Face Up” from their Roll the Bones album has this great verse:
You can go out
You can take a ride
And when you get out on your own
You get all smoothed out inside
and it’s good to be alone.

Pinkfloyd has a couple good ones. One is Syd Barrett era and I believe it is called “bike”. The other is Dave Gilmour era after syd and is about hill climbing as far as I’m concerned! It is called “Fearless”. Enjoy!

(5) Dan says:

“Ride Away” by Roy Orbison.

Technically, I think he’s singing about being on a motorcycle since he says “Big motor burning the road” but think of YOURSELF as the “big motor” and you’re set! Now, get your “two wheels a’turning”!

Here in Brazil, kids have a fun song in “Bicicleta” by music great Toquinho. But I wish there were more songs that would evoke the grown-up freedom and toughness of cycling.

(24) Dick in NH says:

“Bicycle”, Livingston Taylor

I ride my bicycle to work each day
It’s not so far
It’s better for me than my car.
I wear a helmet that is made of
Rigid Styrofoam
Inspected by a French guy named Guillaume.
I downshift my Shimanno gears
I pedal hard and I’m out of here
Glad I am that the coast is clear
Glad I am to be
My bicycle and me.

Some Saturdays at six a.m. I get up
With Bill and Flo
In the parking lot of Ho Jo’s west of town
We ride light bikes that cost big bucks
We curse at smelly trucks
Mile after mile ’til the sun is almost down.
What a ride, what a life
Maybe I’m crazy, don’t ask my wife
I’ve been in love with these spinning wheels
Since I was maybe three
My bicycle and me.

Pedal that bike, pedal that bike
Don’t open that door ’til I go by.

Pedal that bike, pedal that bike
That little old lady in the Dodge Diplomat
I don’t think she sees me
I hope she don’t teach me how to fly.

I wear Lycra, it fits really closely to my skin
White to purple is the place where it begins
I pad my butt and I’m careful
To stay out of ruts
Wrap around sunglasses, I’m an alien
Feel my heart go pit-a-pat
Hello big hill good-bye fat
Life goes by just like that
A forty something spree is
My bicycle and me.

“Busted Bicycle” – Leo Kottke (No lyrics but some amazing 12 string guitar craziness!)

“Let Me Lie” – Trey Anastasio (A song by Phish guitarist/singer which has a vocal round of “Gonna take my bike out, gonna take my bike. Gonna ride it slowly gonna ride it just how I like”)

“Rory Rides Me Raw” – The Vaselines (An ode to one of the songwriter’s (Eugene Kelly) bike that he named Rory

(63) cyclehoney says:

Wait. It troubles me that some folks are posting what they are actually listening to while riding. It is my understanding and practice that a cyclist NEVER rides with ear buds, headphones, etc in order to be totally alert on the road. I have yelled, “on your left!” to oblivious riders who are plugged-in, only to get glares when I pass.

the bouncing souls – streetlight serenade (to no one)

June 29, 2013 at 4:27 am
(67) Nippy says:

“Bicycle Rider” by The Beach Boys – fairly obscure short piece from some abandoned sessions for Smile I think. Weird instrumental – Brian Wilson playing around with sounds.

“Summer Cycle” by Toploader – about the joys of cycling in the sun.

“Bike Ride To The Moon” Dukes of the Stratosphear (XTC) – neo-psychedelia sound not unlike Bike by Syd, or My White Bicycle.

“Broken Bicycles” by Tom Waits from the soundtrack to One From The Heart. Lovely song, not really about cycling though. Also covered by Anne Sofie von Otter on the album she did with Elvis Costello (For The Stars)

“Riding My Bike” by Madness – this was on the b-side of “Driving In My Car” and is very catchy as you might expect from Madness

“Bicycle Tune” by Pentangle – instrumental piece by John Renbourn, not sure what album originally, I have it on a compilation called Light Flight whose title track is just wonderful (but not about bikes although the lyrics could be about getting out of the city on a bike).

“Broken Spokes” by Boud Deun… actually the whole album could count for this list because it is called “The Stolen Bicycle”. They are a jazz fusion outfit, along the lines of the Mahavishnu Orchestra…

I think these are the only songs I have in my collection about bikes which haven’t yet been mentioned.

July 19, 2013 at 9:41 pm
(68) Alice says:

Brand New Key/ Pair of Roller Skates. I absolutely LOVE this song. It may be old, but it is SO catchy!
“I rode my bicycle past your window last night, I roller skated to your door at daylight, it almost seems like you’re avoiding me…..”
“I ride my bike, I roller skate, don’t drive no car. Don’t go too fast, but I go pretty far, for someone who don’t drive, I’ve been all around the world. Some people say I’ve done alright for a girl.”
Check it out!

You’re missing three old school indie classics.

“The chain that fell off my bike last night, is now wrapped round my heart. Sometimes I think that fate has been against me from the start”
Belle and Sebastian ‘A century of fakers’
“Did I say I would see you soon?
Well I’m sorry, but i just came off my bike
And my face is scarred
And chance has barred me seeing you tonight”
