Friday June 19, 2009

From a reader:

biking is freedom...i'm 53 and started riding just 4 years ago...my husband rides behind me..likes to watch me he says...we go away to different towns on weekends to bike ride...this bike riding has made us feel young and alive and just happy to be together..we've been married 35 years and i can't believe we have yet another new thing to enjoy!

I had to laugh at this. My husband and I haven’t owned a car in over 3 years but only recently started riding bicycles. I ride my bicycle to and from work and to the grocery store, however, on the weekends we ride together to go garage-saleing all over the Northern Virginia area. It is ‘our’ time together. Riding does indeed make us feel much younger. What made me laugh is my other half also rides behind me and when I finally asked why he never leads he answered, “I like to watch you…and you know where you’re going”

(2) David McKibbin says:

I love it when other “old folks” begin riding. I am 61 and have been riding seriously for over 10 years. Not only did it knock almost 50 pounds off, my blood pressure is now normal, and I haven’t felt so good in years. And if provides those other wonderful benefits for partners, go for it!!

I think that’s great! My husband and I have been riding bikes together for about 15 years now, I just have one question. If you ride to be together, why do you go to different towns to ride on the weekends?

(4) Elaine says:

I started riding May of last year after being told I could never run, even with surgery. I was in a lot of pain but my college cross country runner son needed a training partner for hot long runs and I agreed to start riding my bike to carry water and keep him motivated. Within a week my knees improved. Now I ride 15 to 20 miles a day and my son and I are training for RAGBRI (Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa)I turn 54 this fall

(6) Mazhar Faiz says:

I am a retired Col from Pakistan Army. I started riding bike when I was posted at a hill station, Murree, an old Britsh times Cantonment, aprox 80 Km north of Islamabad, Pakistan. I was inspired by an old Polish cyclist(61 years old) on tour to this counrty in 2001.I remenber his distinct feelings about biking when I told him that he is very old and how come he rode bike over so long distances. He said ” Biking is my life”, I live with it like a normal life and it has nothing to do with my aging”.Since then I am padelling, padelling and padelling. It is really fun.I keep adding gaugetry to my bike. Nothing like biking in my Life now.
