Zig-Zag Lines to Slow Motorists at Bike/Ped Crossings
A crazy crooked line running right down the middle of the traffic lane is enough to make most motorists say, "What the #$%*?!"
And that's the point, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), which recently began a year-long trial where 500 feet of zig-zag lines are painted in the middle of traffic lanes as they come to a trail crossing used by cyclists and walkers."
"'It is a low cost strategy to get motorists to slow down . . .' says VDOT's Mike Salmon. "While at first they may be a little disoriented, the main point is to get them to pay attention and slow down."If you're familiar with the general Washington, D.C. area, the test is of the zig-zag lines is in the high-pedestrian zone where Belmont Ridge Road intersects with the Washington and Old Dominion trail in Loudoun County. VDOT may also paint the crooked lines where the W&OD trail crosses Sterling Boulevard.
Do you think this will work? Is it a good idea? Comment below.

Might but its worth trying. Better to try and fail than never try as far as I am concerned. It means that someone is thinking about it high up and I like that.
I think they will work well for a while because they will be brand new to drivers. Once drivers get used to them they won’t see them anymore, just like speed limit signs and no turn on red.
It is worth a try,but like other Responders have said they will just ignore it after awhile.
Probably best if they put in a Series of Traffic Humps for the 500metres with an advanced warning Sign of these Humps and also saying Motorists Please slow down Cyclist and Pedestrians Entrance. Motorists are basically Inconsiderate and will ignore Safety Signs anyway,if the Police are not around they just do not Care. Dublin Ireland.
