Elizabeth Rose, About.com's Guide to Southwest U.S. Travel, recently received an inquiry from a some folks who were thinking about riding from the U.S. through Mexico. She's turned to us, asking for help from cyclists who might have some wisdom to share.
Here's the question she received:
A friend and I are planning on a bike tour beginning this summer from the US, through Mexico, and onwards to the rest of Central America. The location I'm most worried about is the US/Mexican border . . .I've been able to find very little information on biking safety in Mexico, so any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
To read the entire inquiry and weigh in with your thoughts, please check out Liz's post here about cycling safely along the US/Mexican border.

I would not do it. It is not safe these days.
And the state department says so.
I live in Tucson and I give you an emphatic “NO”! Find another way than biking through Mexico. There is an actual war going on down here. It isn’t even safe for the locals, let alone touristas. My I recommend flying to Panama ans continuing from there? Good luck and Bon Voyage whatever you decide to do.
