CO2 is great as it eliminates the need for a pump and I can inflate to higher pressure. I carry an inflator with 3 cartridges. In 4 years I needed a pump only once (forgot to replace earlier used cartridges) but I was able to flag down a pump carrying fellow cyclist quickly for a quick inflate. Only way to go!
ok, it would be great to use a CO2 inflator, but i always rely on my frame pump; for it can just maintain a little flat of tire.
I saw that 2008 Ironman Hawaii women’s winner Chrissie Wellington almost lost the race when she had a flat tire. She accidentally discharged the CO2 gas before attaching the cartridge to the tire valve. She had to appeal to passing riders for another cartridge. Fortunately for her, another woman was generous to toss another CO2 cartridge to her. Wellington made up the lost time and ended up winning the race and defending her title. But she almost blew it because of the cartridge. Something to consider during a race.
