Bike Trips: Battlefields and Historical Sites

Wednesday June 18, 2008

Want to get an up-close look at history? There's no better way to explore battlefields and historical sites than by bike. Or how about following the Underground Railroad, the path that runaway slaves followed to get to freedom? Or the route that Lewis and Clark followed with their Corps of Discovery to explore the Louisiana Purchase territory from 1804-1806?

If this is the kind of thing that sounds cool to you, the good news is that there are lots of options for exploring American battlefields and historical sites that help capture some of the pivotal moments in U.S. history. From self-guided tours to fully-supported excursions where your meals, lodging and nightly cultural programming is all planned, there are many fine choices. Explore them here.

I can personally vouch for the Saratoga Battlefield trail. A great 12 mile loop with awesome scenery. Turning point of the American Revolution!

I would like to thank Al for commenting on the Saratoga Battlefield tour road in Saratoga, NY. As a volunteer interpreter there leading free tours by bicycle for the past four years, and having visited other Revolutionary and French and Indian War historic sites, the Saratoga Battlefield ranks way up at the top for fantastic scenery and significant historical impact. Well worth a trip from anywhere. It is a great launching point to discover other related historic sites that pepper the whole upstate NY area. I would like to pass along “cheers” for a terrific bike trip in Bennington, VT conducted on june 21 by American Heritage Bicycle Tours. As a newcommer to cycling I really appreciated the personal attention, support and wonderful historical touches throughout. I found myself on streets and hills I would never have attempted on my own. It was both safer and more fun with a group and I highly recommend Mr. Jenks’instruction and tours. Thanks again for a fun start to summer!
